Staff Writer The first piece of Camp Evans
officially will be transferred to the township Monday at the Planning Board
meeting.
|
Thomson III, the mayor's designate to the
Planning Board, said the technical subdivision legally will describe the
land's latitude, longitude and overall property line.
The transfer would enable the township to control the property's upkeep, he said. Currently, the Infoage Science/History Learning Center is on the Area B section of |
land.
In 1999, while cleaning up Camp Evans for conversion to civilian use, the Army found mercury had contaminated parts of the sewer system at the former information-age research center site. The sewers were removed the next year. However, it then was found the sewers could not be replaced using federal funds dedicated to closing military installations. |
But Rep. Chris Smith,
R-Monmouth, helped convince Pentagon officials that replacing some of the
sewers serving the historic buildings would help save the structures, said
Fred Carl, Infoage director.
According to the agreement, Carl said, the Army likely will replace the sewers serving the historic buildings, while Infoage and Wall likely will replace other sewers. Thomson said the rest of the |
land probably would be re-leased to the township
once the sewer work is done and other terms are satisfied. He said Area
B will be rejoined with the remaining Camp Evans land when the bulk of
it is handed over to the township.
The Planning Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Municipal Complex at Allaire and Baileys Corner roads. Brandy Roon: (732) 643-4268 or e-mail broon@app.com |
