Saturday the 26th International Marconi Day - OMARC Celebrates Marconi's Birthday

WA2GM, the station of the Marconi Chapter 138, Quarter Century Wireless
Association of New Jersey, USA plans to participate in International Marconi Day.
We will be on-the-air from the old Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company
building located at Camp Evans, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, USA.

International Marconi Day (IMD) is a 24-hour amateur radio event held annually to celebrate the
birth of Guglielmo Marconi on the 25th April 1874. The IMD event is not a contest, it is an
opportunity for amateurs around world to make point-to-point contact with historic Marconi sites
using HF communications techniques similar to those used by Marconi, and to gain an attractive
Award for achieving the requisite number of Marconi stations worked. International Marconi Day (IMD)
takes place this year on during the weekend of 28th and 29th of April 2007.

Sunday the 27th InfoAge Open 1:00 to 4:00PM

SPECIAL EVENT:  2:00 PM - Crystal Clear by Richard Thompson Jr.
Sunday April 27th @ 2 PM Richard Thompson, Jr.the author of a new book "Crystal Clear" will give a
lecture at InfoAge. Old-timers may remember the advent of single
crystal control for ham rigs in the 30's and newbies will only be
familiar with today's frequency synthesizers that can make an
infinite number of frequencies from a single crystal; but in-between
then and now was WWII & Korea when multi channel crystal controlled
radios were vital to our national defense and this required the
creation of an instant industry to produce hundreds of millions of
precise crystals for frequency control. Hear how this was done and
how a myriad of technical and production problems were solved.
Anyone involved in the history of radio, military, ham or otherwise
will find this lecture well worth while. Fort Monmouth was the center of much
of this activity so it is local history as well.

There is no admission charge and copies of the author signed book will be on sale.

The showing is sponsored by the New Jersey Coast Section of the IEEE
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) and InfoAge.
The book is published by the IEEE and endorsed by the IEEE History Center.
The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology.

You should not miss this event.

Saturday the 14th The New Jersey Antique Radio Club's 2008 Crystal-Set Seminar will be held 14 June at the Radio Technology Museum at InfoAge.

See: http://www.njarc.ar88.net/Xtal-Seminar.htm Be sure to check the pictures of last year's event.

For more than 100 years, ordinary people have been building their own radio receivers that work without the use of batteries or connection to an AC outlet. These radio sets work by using a solid-state device to rectify the radio-frequency current captured by the antenna. In the earliest sets, this diode took the form of a mineral crystal in contact with a fine wire know as a cat’s whisker.
This event will give you the opportunity to share the magic of crystal-set building. The club will supply a kit of parts and technical assistance to construct the New Jersey Antique Radio Club “Pretty Good Xtal Set,” a design by noted crystal-set guru Al Klase. Participants will wind their own tuning coil, and assemble approximately ten components into a working receiver. Children 10 and older, accompanied and assisted by an adult are welcome. If you have electrical hand tools, wire cutters, long-nosed pliers, screwdrivers, a soldering iron, etc. bring them along.

General admission is free, but there is a $15 participation fee for each crystal set kit. The number of kits is limited, so please contact Al Klase, al@ar88.net mailto:al@ar88.net, 908-892-5465, to reserve a kit. This will be a day-long event. Registration for those building sets will open at 9:30 AM, and an orientation will follow at 10:00. The seminar will run until 4:00 PM. Bring a bag lunch, or chip in for pizza. Those not building radios are welcome to drop in at any time.
