Architectural Feature: Interior , Section D.
 Date: 1982

The interior of Section D of 9036 was completely renovated in 1982. It still has the center hall running the length of the section with offices and laboratories on both sides of hall. All interior partition walls were removed and replaced by a flexible wall partition system.  The system consists of factory made 18" wide and 8-foot tall panels. The panels are manufactured with a vinyl washable coating.  They are engineered to create a partition wall without using metal wall studs. The panels are screw-nailed to floor and ceiling rails.  Custom manufactured metal spacers are used between sets of panels.  Standard steel door frames were added as desired.  In one room, a computer support raised floor is found (Photo No. 92).  An enclosed stairway leads to storage space in the attic.  The space was once used to store glass-tubing stock for custom vacuum tube development in the laboratories on the main floor.  Shards of uranium leaded glass were discovered during the search conducted in every building and the entire grounds for any traces of radioactive materials.  All shelves and flooring was remove and the storage space vacuumed.  This space will not be publicly accessible.  A hot water radiator supply pipe in the attic space burst due to freezing and has caused ceiling and wall water damage (Photo No. 93).

Proposed work

During phase I determine condition of heating supply pipes and repair if necessary.  During Phase IV, prepare space for flexible use for Infoage science-history center programs and short-term event rental (see Drawing 9036C/D Existing Conditions and Proposed Changes).  Eight flexible spaces would be created by the selective removal of five partition walls.  This section also has a computer room with raised floor.  This would be maintained for lease, computer demonstration, computer benchmarks or other similar activities. Consideration has been given to evening use by the adjacent community college.  Upgrade restroom as per ADA standards.  Add exit signs and fire alarms as per current fire code.
