Architectural Feature: Attic Laser Laboratory
 Date: 1950; 1980s

Located in the Attic of 9037A is the sole second story laboratory created in all of the 'H'  building complexes.  This special use laboratory was used for laser development, testing and creation of laser applications-to-weapons systems.  The laboratory is reached by a single stairway off section 9037A hall.  It consists of two rooms at the east end of the building (Photo No. 98).  The end room has a single window where ventilation louvers are found in the other end walls of each 'H' building.  The window is broken.  Opposite the window end of the room is the entrance to a laser tunnel which runs nearly the length of two ‘H’ building sections, (Photo No. 99) for approximately 170'.  The walls of the interior room and the tunnel are painted with black paint to absorb light.  During a 1980s renovation for another project, an air-handler unit for a new central air-conditioning system was cut into the old tunnel and blocks the view of its length.

Proposed work

During Phase I repair broken window.  The laser laboratory will be preserved in place for storage or until a safe reuse can be determined.  Consideration will be given to creating a similar laboratory (Phase II or III) in the attic of 9010 and/or 9011 for laser, light, sound, and fibre optics transmission demonstrations for small groups of supervised students.  The unique demonstrations possible in a laboratory such as this would assist physics instructions teach light and wave theory and science.  This would be a post Phase V activity, if feasible, and fire safety egress exits can be created.
