Platform / tower 9178 is located next to building 9036. It is five stories tall with three elevated research levels (Photo No. 134). Eight steel columns support an enclosed platform. A three section metal stairway with two landings affords access to the tower (Photo No. 135). A steel beam protrudes for hoisting equipment to the platform. The main level has a safety railing and a two room enclosed shop (Photo No. 136). On the east, north and south walls five garage doors allow equipment to be aimed toward the ocean (Photo No. 137) or the Shark River or open antenna test fields near Belmar Boulevard to be tested. The east room has three doors as well as a removable canopy in the roof to allow equipment to point skyward. A single set of stairs reaches the roof top level of the enclosed platform. This second level is mostly open. It has a safety railing and stairs to a third level, 10' x 10' open platform. The structural condition of the platform appears to be solid. Some corrugated metal under the first level has portions rusted away. Rust can be seen all over.

Proposed work
During Phase I the structure needs protective fencing to prevent access
by unauthorized persons. Also, during Phase I, the structure will
need Surface preparation, priming, and repainting. In view of the
height hazard, this work will have to done by professionals. As a
Phase IV activity, determination will be made on how to safely reuse this
structure. The structure will be preserved in place as a cold war
communications research and testing tool.
