8.56 Architecture Feature: Restricted Air-space beacon (Building 9175 - relocation)
  Date: 1947

The restricted Air-space warning beacon tower (Building 9175) is at Sixth Street and Avenue A. (Photo No. 147).  It is an angle iron tower with a rotating beacon onto of a small service platform, approximately 75 feet high.  A simple ladder runs to the service platform.  The tower is in good condition.  An enameled sign reads "DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AERONAUTICS - WARNING" with a message warning not to injure of deface this property.  An identical tower is found at the Deal Test site, in Ocean Township. This same type of tower is preserved at Puma Air/ Space museum.  It would enhance the character of the historic district.

Proposed work

Relocate the Air-space warning beacon tower to historic district prior to its demolition.  One of two former tower locations will be selected in consultation with the NJ-SHPO.  The first potential location is north of the former Marconi Power station, building 9006, which had a television tower.  A second location could be to the east of the radar laboratory H-building 9010 center entrance.  Footings of a 1960s television tower remain. Both towers are seen in 1961 aerial photos.
