All buildings formerly supplied with natural gas have had the heating units converted to oil fuel, which is now supplied by above ground storage tanks. All original underground storage tanks have been removed. If natural gas is used again in the future, the gas company recommends that new supply lines be installed as the original “black pipe”supply lines were not maintained properly. As of December 2001, a most of the buildings in the historic district have heat and/or electric service restored. A fenced electrical substation supplies all the power to a number of masonry vaults with distribution transformers. The BRAC office will be removing this substation to due to PCB contamination. Construction plans are being developed.
An official protest has been submitted to the Fort Monmouth BRAC office by Wall Township, The Marconi Park Complex Advisory Committee and Congressman Chris Smith (4th District) requesting sewer replacement and improved maintenance of historic buildings. Wall Township has also requested the BRAC office to reconsider sewer replacement. Given the transfer delays the lack of complete utilities has had an adverse impact upon the historic district.
